No More Chocolate Chip Cookies??

14507825_sNew research may help sell more open houses while easing my waste line – sounds like a win-win. But no more chocolate chip cookies? Really??

Turns out the old real estate advice of baking chocolate chip cookies before an open house may need updating. You can put away that mixing bowl or tub of cookie dough and turn off the oven. Research is now saying that chocolate chip cookies are one of the worst scents to have in an open house.

I’m skeptical but willing to go along.

Researchers sampled over 400 people in a Swiss home store to determine what kind of scents were most pleasing and promoted decision making. The findings may easily apply to open houses too.

Eric Spangenberg of Washington State University, one of the authors of the study, told The Wall Street Journal that complex scents like baked goods could distract potential homebuyers, even if the scent is pleasant. Some folks will subconsciously try to figure out the scent instead of spending time deciding if the house is a place they’d like to live. Maybe what they’re really doing is wondering, “where are those darn cookies I smell?”

What other popular scents to avoid?
Potpourri, gourmet food and other baked goods are more distracting complex smells that can distract the folks at your open house.

So what’s a homeowner to do?

Fill your home with simple scents – like pine, lemon, cedar, mint and vanilla. These scents are pleasing while being less distracting because folks can easily identify them. Make sure the smell make sense for your home – which in Boulder can be easy. Cut some fresh pine boughs, pick some mint or lavender from the garden or squeeze some fresh lemons. All these smells are fresh and inviting like the outdoor lifestyle we all enjoy here in Boulder.
